The Promise Fund of Florida

A lifesaving bridge to breast and cervical care health

The Promise Fund of Florida’s goal is to reduce early deaths from breast and cervical cancer and to overcome barriers to healthcare for at-risk and under-served populations.  The Promise Fund of Florida addresses disparities and health inequities and provides access to healthcare for individuals in need throughout South Florida. We are working within Palm Beach and Martin counties to raise funds which will be deployed locally, back into the most disadvantaged communities in South Florida.

Created by Ambassador Nancy Brinker, Julie Fisher Cummings and Laurie Silvers, The Promise Fund of Florida was born out of a critical need to respond to the growing women’s health crisis in Florida and make a promise to this community to respond to breast and cervical health needs. ALL funds will stay right here in South Florida.

According to the Florida Women’s Funding Alliance, Florida is ranked LAST out of the 50 states in government resources for women in healthcare -  women of diversity are dying at an alarming rate.

Health safety net organizations that serve breast and cervical cancer patients and women’s preventative care in Florida have experienced a decrease in funding due to the impact of natural disasters. South Florida has vulnerable health resources and a large portion of the population have minimal or no health coverage.  Many women are at greater risk of going undiagnosed with breast and cervical cancer or are not able to access free or reduced fee services. There is an exacerbated crisis in breast and cervical prevention and treatment in our community.

The Promise Fund of Florida has a proven model that works, and we aim to increase access to quality, timely health care. Our “Community Health Breast and Cervical Cancer Navigators” will be selected and trained by professionals in our communities to offer one-on-one assistance to individuals as they journey from screening, diagnosis, treatment and completion of care. We fund these Navigators and place them in the community where they effectively connect at-risk individuals with traditional health care providers who provide screening and treatment services, transportation and financial assistance along with education and prevention gatherings. Research has shown Navigator patients have significantly better health outcomes and survival rates. Ultimately, we will save lives at a lower cost to the local communities.

The Promise Fund of Florida will establish a network of community-based, culturally competent health navigators to navigate patients in asset-limited households and high-risk communities. We will provide education, connections to free or reduced care and follow up to ensure that the patient is actively receiving necessary treatment. Community Breast and Cervical Health Navigators will unite our South Florida partners and community assets forming a network of support and education programs to dispel myths, address cultural barriers and other challenges that keep women and their families from seeking preventative care and diagnosis.

The Promise Fund of Florida has a goal to raise 5 million dollars by 2020, and our hope is to replicate this in four major cities by 2021.

We encourage you to join our efforts…. Together we can build a better future for those in our own community.
