Community Foundation to deploy more than $2.3 million in COVID-19 Rapid Response Grants
Update: More than $3.3M secured for COVID-19 Response Fund as of 5/16/2020
West Palm Beach, FL (April 9, 2020) – Through money raised for its COVID-19 Response Fund and grants directed from Donor-Advised Funds, the Community Foundation will impact the community through more than $2.3 million in grantmaking. To date, the Fund has granted $700,000 to local nonprofit organizations on the front lines of the pandemic.
“Community foundations are uniquely well-positioned to identify, activate, and strategically connect people in the greatest need to lifesaving resources in these challenging times,” said Brad Hurlburt, president and CEO of Community Foundation. “We are strengthening our trusted partnerships with multiple nonprofit agencies to quickly and proactively help the most vulnerable in our community with immediate basic needs such as payments for utilities, childcare, and rent.”
Community Foundation has conducted a comprehensive assessment to identify critical real-time needs, as well as longer-term recovery challenges. Foundation staff is working to quickly deploy grants to organizations providing food, housing assistance and access to healthcare as they respond to the global crisis. Longer-term needs are being researched for future funding.

Funds will be released on a rolling basis as fundraising continues throughout the coronavirus outbreak and its recovery phases. The latest round of rapid response grants include:
Area Agency on Aging
Funding will be used to increase the organization’s remote computing/telephonic capacity to allow them to expand services in health, food, and case management for seniors.
Boca Helping Hands
Funding will be used to expand a critical, hot-meal distribution service to families and kids that have seen a drastic increase in demand due to COVID-19.
Funding will be used for clients who need rental/mortgage assistance and utility assistance as a result of loss or interruption of income.
Children and Family Charities
Funding will be used to provide basic necessities and rental/utility assistance to clients affected by COVID-19.
Clinics Can Help
Funding will be used to increase the distribution of needed medical equipment and supplies to those affected by COVID-19, as well as, maintain equipment and supply distribution to current residences.
Community Health Center of West Palm Beach
Funding will be used to help implement safety procedures so the Center can re-open and screen patients in-person. Funds will also be used to implement telehealth protocols for primary care operations.
Funding will be used to purchase essential food staples and to-go packaging materials not provided to CROS by the Palm Beach County Food Bank or Feeding South Florida, as well as, help recoup food losses from food drives usually occurring during this time. Funding will also be used to purchase tablets for client intake and to expand kitchen and food pantry staff capacity.
Feed the Hungry
Funding will be used to hire a bilingual food service coordinator who will work with the new influx of clients affected by COVID-19 to help ensure food is delivered in areas where food pantries have closed.
Feeding South Florida
Funding will be used to support FSF’s ability to continue bringing food to Palm Beach County. Given the current food sourcing and distribution landscape, it costs FSF .19 per pound to provide these distributions. At this per pound rate, $100,000 will provide 526,316 pounds of food to children and families – enough for 438,596 meals, which is approximately one week of emergency relief.
Genesis Community Health
Funding will be utilized to launch a telehealth platform, which will allow medical and dental providers to care for patients remotely. Funds will cover launching this platform, purchasing licenses, and providing one-on-one training.
Funding will be used for food purchase expenses over the next three months to expand food distribution services in the Glades area.
Guatemalan Mayan Center
Funding will be used to hire translators to communicate with clients who speak (Mam, Q’anjob’al, poqomam, Ki'che, and popti), hire social workers to process clients and assist them in receiving COVID-19 government assistance, and to purchase supplies to help teachers transition online.
Habitat for Humanity of Martin County
Funding will be used for expanded client services to serve homeowner families affected by COVID-19 who can no longer make payments. Funding will also be used to complete at least three of the five homes currently under construction by June 30.
Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County
Funding will be used to help cover the cost of homeowner mortgage payments during this crisis and lost revenue from two ReStores.
House of Hope
Funding will be used to meet the substantial increases in the demand for food. The organization is expecting an additional 150,000 pounds of food through May. Because of the widespread impact of this pandemic, sourcing through typical no cost partners is no longer an option.
Legal Aid Society
Funding will be used to upgrade Legal Aid's technology systems to assist in remote video hearings and an increase in support for housing assistance, employment assistance, etc.
Light House Cafe Ministries
Funding will be used to expand a critical to-go meal service to families and kids that have seen a drastic increase in demand due to COVID-19.
Meals on Wheels
Funding will be used for meal costs and meal delivery expenses, such as hiring couriers to make deliveries when staff is unable to cover the entire count. Funding will also be used to assist clients with additional grocery and home needs, such as breakfast foods, toilet paper, detergents and other essentials.
Funds will be used to pay insurance, mortgage, and building upkeep as many tenants are experiencing loss of income due to reduced work hours or job loss.
Palm Beach County Food Bank
Funding will be used for fuel, trucking, and staffing costs, all of which are necessary to respond to the community’s increased demand for food due to COVID-19. There has been a significant variance in food donations received and in the number of agencies that are open and serving neighbors in need, so this support will allow operational adjustments based on food procurement and distribution variables.
Funding will be used to purchase and distribute food as food donations are down 90%. Funds will also be used to expand and continue a senior center, addiction recovery and human trafficking support services.
Funding will be used to provide rent and utility assistance. Most will not qualify for the new federal aid, so funds will also be used to cover the costs of 24/7 facilities that care for the homeless.
Leroy Jefferson Medical Society
Funding will be used to continue operational costs as volunteer staff has seen a surge in demand.
The Lord's Place
Funding will be used to pay for Joshua Catering’s social enterprise personnel and occupancy costs. This funding will enable the agency to ensure its social enterprise staff is able to provide for basic needs during the health crisis. In addition, the funding will indirectly improve homeless services, since it will free up additional unrestricted funding to cover other significant budget shortfalls due to COVID-19.
True Fast Outreach Ministries
Funding will be used to hire a full-time case manager to assist and track clients in need of home delivery services; to purchase hygiene items, cleaning supplies, bags for food delivery; and to provide emergency phone operations to clients in need of critical services.
