Our History

Community Foundation Historical Milestones:

1972 Winsome and Michael McIntosh create the Palm Beach County Community Foundation.

1979 The Foundation receives its first major bequest when West Palm Beach resident Ilse Klassen leaves $300,000 to the Community Foundation.

1983 The Community Foundation hires an Executive Director and begins fundraising efforts.

1984 Foundation President William E. Benjamin II issues a $100,000 challenge grant to the board of directors, which is met successfully.

1985 Foundation raises funds to match a $250,000 challenge grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

1986 The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation issues a second challenge grant of $1.5 million to be met over three years.

1989 The Foundation launches the Glades Community Development Corporation to help empower residents to enhance the quality of life in Belle Glade, South Bay, and Pahokee.

1991 The Foundation expands its service area and receives the largest gift to date, a $15 million bequest from Marie Graber Martens.

1994 The Foundation is awarded a $100,000 grant from the Ford Foundation that enables it to commission a countywide survey of public attitudes and priorities.

1995  Foundation assets exceed $30 million for the first time.

1996 Foundation assets reach $50 million thanks in part to a $5 million gift from the Hans and Mary Stratmann Foundation. 

1996 First Public Opinion Survey conducted (for Palm Beach County only).

1997 Mary and Robert Pew make the largest gift in the Foundation's history, $25 million, to establish the Pew Public Education Fund, a supporting organization of the Community Foundation.

1998 The Foundation publishes a special newspaper insert, Face to Face, to highlight the rich diversity of our area's residents.

2000 Ground is broken in downtown West Palm Beach for the Community Foundation's permanent home.

2002  The Foundation moves to its new home building and celebrates its 30th anniversary.

2004 The Community Foundation is awarded a $25 million grant by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to establish the John T. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fund, an endowment fund to address the needs in the areas of arts and culture, education, the environment, and community development.

2005 The Foundation manages assets of $112 million. It commissions a Public Opinion Survey, 10 years after the first, including Martin County.   

2006

The Community Foundation building suffers major damage in Hurricane Wilma and  operations move to a temporary location until May when repairs are completed.

 2007      The Community Foundation manages assets of $132 million. In 2006-07 the Foundation distributes $8 million in grants and over half a million in scholarships to 99 students.
