Our Water... Our Future... Our Choice.
Community awareness around our regional issues of drought and flood protection and water quality is vital. To that end the Environmental Endowment Fund was established by the Community Foundation for environmental grant making. Resources from this permanently endowed fund were used by the Community Foundation to commission an independent study: Envisioning Alternative Futures for Water Resources in Palm Beach and Martin Counties, by Dr. Lance Gunderson of Emory University and Stephen Light of Adaptive Strategies. The study raises complex issues affecting sustainable development if the growth rate of the counties exceeds the water supplies available to sustain such growth. The study was commissioned by the Community Foundation to help promote and build public consensus on water quality and conservation practices and policies. The study was released at community events that also featured Dr. Edith Widder of the Ocean Research and Conservation Association, who introduced their Kilroy water quality monitoring tool, an exciting tool that is funded in part by a grant from the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties.
