Introducing the Scholarship Class of 2010: 75 students from Palm Beach and Martin Counties received over half a million dollars in scholarships this year from the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, helping them attend college.

75 Students from Palm Beach and Martin Counties Received $558,600 in Scholarships

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (June 28, 2010) – The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties is helping 75 inspiring local students attend college this fall through awarding $558,600 in scholarships. The economic recession is felt by everyone, including thousands of students who want to attend college but may not be given the chance. Given this challenge, this year’s scholarship program was particularly vital for many outstanding students from Palm Beach and Martin counties.

“If you ever wondered if is it truly possible to make a difference in the world, one person at a time, then witness the beauty and joy in the  faces of these young men and women tonight, and know that answer is a resounding “yes!” said Community Foundation President and CEO Leslie Lilly at the annual awards ceremony.

Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $28,000 were awarded from 40 separate scholarship funds established by donors from throughout Palm Beach and Martin Counties and managed by the Community Foundation. “Scholarships are inspired by the charitable vision of individuals whose heart and passion for life took flight in the form of the gift of education,” said Lilly.

Donors can establish a scholarship fund in their name or in someone’s honor or memory. The Foundation also accepts donations to the Community Scholarship Fund, a general scholarship fund that provided 13 scholarships this year. Donations can be made online at www.yourcommunityfoundation.org/give.

The scholarship funds provide opportunities to graduating seniors and college students with highly diverse backgrounds and interests to pursue varying areas of study in colleges, universities, and schools for technical training.

Qualifying students were selected by members of the Foundation's scholarship committee of community leaders and retired educators, chaired by Barbara Bishop Chapin and co-chaired by Sally Gingras.

Since 1983, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $5.6 million in scholarships to nearly 1,400 students. More information on the Community Foundation’s scholarship program is available at www.yourcommunityfoundation.org or by calling (561) 659-6800. Scholarship applications are typically due the first of February each year.
