WEST PALM BEACH, FL (May 9, 2013) -- Mrs. Adi Blum cared about helping at-risk children – especially when it came to education. To honor her legacy and continue her support for students, her foundation, The Walter and Adi Blum Foundation, Inc., partnered with the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties and awarded a $15,000 grant to DonorsChoose.org. The Blum Foundation’s generosity was doubled when the Community Foundation matched their donation dollar for dollar and maximized their investment to have a $30,000 impact.
The Blum Foundation’s grant has had far-reaching effects. Sixty-eight different classroom projects that focus on several areas including math, science, literacy, and writing were funded in 29 Palm Beach and Martin County schools reaching over 4,100 students in grades Pre-K through 12th.
“The directors of the Blum Foundation are committed to carrying out the charitable wishes of Mrs. Blum,” comments Sandra Gambill, director. “Partnering with the Community Foundation by providing a grant to DonorsChoose.org was an innovative way to maximize our support and help as many students and educators as possible.”
“Due to cutbacks within the public school system, teachers often lack extra resources to provide new and creative learning projects,” Gambill adds. “With our support and the help of others, we are providing important teaching and learning tools which otherwise might not be available to students.”
In January, the Community Foundation invested in DonorsChoose.org to support teachers and their classroom projects and pledged to match every dollar donated that supports a Palm Beach or Martin County classroom project featured on DonorsChoose.org, up to $70,000. The Community Foundation provided gift cards to local residents to encourage support of the classroom projects – bringing the total investment to $100,000. The Community Foundation’s investment was made possible by The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fund, an endowed fund of the Foundation.
DonorsChoose.org engages the community in the public school system by providing a simple and personal way to help our teachers. A variety of classroom projects featured on the website describe the goals of the projects and the materials needed. When classroom projects reach their funding goal, DonorsChoose.org ships the project materials directly to the classroom. The Community Foundation, together with their donors, have funded over 380 classroom projects, reaching 35,000 students in Palm Beach and Martin counties.
