100 Local Students Receive Scholarships

From the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (June 19, 2015) – College is on the mind of many high school seniors in Palm Beach and Martin County. This year, 100 deserving students will be fulfilling their educational dreams thanks, in part, to the donors of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. These students are the recipients of more than $779,750 in scholarships awarded by the organization.

The Community Foundation has nearly 100 scholarship funds, established by donors who are committed to education, and often named in the memory of a loved one.  The organization has awarded $8.3 million in scholarship grants since 1983, and helped 1,800 students, making it one of the largest providers of scholarships in the two counties. Students are evaluated by an advisory committee of board members and community volunteers based on a written application, test scores, transcripts and interviews.  Individual scholarships ranged in amounts from $1,000 to $60,000 this year and were awarded to students from 28 high schools in Palm Beach and Martin counties.

“As the cost of college continues to rise, so does the need of many students,” said Brad Hurlburt, president and CEO of the Community Foundation. “It is through the generosity of our donors that these needs can be met while changing lives. Our scholarship program is a wonderful way to empower local youth and show them the impact of philanthropy.”

A native of Rochester, NY, Edward C. “Ted” Trimble graduated from Princeton with a degree in political science.  He served in the US Army for five years during World War II receiving the Legion of Merit and the Italian Cross of Military Valor. After the war, he returned to Rochester and joined the family business, Trimble Nurseryland Furniture Company, one of the largest manufacturers of infant furniture in the country.Donor highlight: Trimble Scholarship for Martin County Fund / Ted Trimble Scholarship Fund for Vocational Training

Community service was always an important part of Ted’s life.  He was president of Planned Parenthood in Rochester; served on the school board; and was on the board of the Rochester Maternal and Adoption Service Center.  He also was instrumental in founding the Rochester Area Community Foundation.

Ted and his wife began wintering in Florida in 1972, and eventually took permanent residence in Martin County. They became involved in the Community Foundation and established a donor advised fund to support local charities and community issues. Ted served as a board member and later as vice-chair, playing an integral role in charting the direction and growth of the Foundation, especially in the expansion of its service area to Martin County. The Trimble family created two scholarship funds: The Trimble Scholarship for Martin County Fund was established in 1990 and is open to any Martin County high school senior with a GPA of 3.0 to 3.5 who participates in extracurricular activities and demonstrates financial need. The Ted Trimble Scholarship Fund for Vocational Training was established after Ted’s death in 1995. It provides assistance for students pursuing a degree or career in the service industry. It’s open to graduates of Martin County high schools, and may be used at community, public or private colleges or at accredited vocational training institutions.

Know God like a Fish.

When you catch a fish,

You can’t see the fish or hear the fish,

But you can feel it tugging.

Felt God tugging on my heart.

The Boca Raton-based Sunburst Foundation was established in 1984 to provide funds to minority students who will attend a four-year, accredited college with a major in the physical sciences (engineering, computer science, biology, etc.). The Foundation started a scholarship fund at the Community Foundation in 2008 to expand their outreach in Palm Beach and Martin counties. Applications are evaluated based primarily on the student's academic performance in high school and financial need. This year, the Sunburst Fund awarded $110,000 in scholarships to seven students. Nearly all will be attending Florida universities.
