Private Foundations

Community Foundation: An Ideal Alternative
Many people create private foundations to facilitate their current giving but fail to consider what will happen to the foundation after they are gone.  Over time, they face rising operating costs and increased government regulations. Often, they just want to be able to focus on their family’s philanthropy and continuing their charitable legacy, not the foundation’s investment and administration.

That’s where we come in. The Community Foundation provides a number of philanthropic services that can solve private foundation management.

Transferring the Foundation’s Funds
By transferring a private foundation into a fund at the Community Foundation, we can help put an end to the administrative burden. Instead, donors are free to focus on the joy of giving. Whether you choose a Donor Advised Fund or a Supporting Organization structure, the benefits will be the same – reduced administrative burdens, maximized charitable giving and the assurance that the foundation’s work will go on as intended. Their legacy continues through intelligent grantmaking that also makes financial sense. Compare the options!

Using a Private Foundation’s Income to Create a Fund
On occasion, the trustees of a private foundation may have difficulty deciding on a sufficient number of grants to meet the annual 5% payout requirement.  A solution is to create a fund at the Community Foundation, named for the private foundation, and to contribute all or part of the current year’s income to the fund.  This option provides a solution enabling trustees to take their time and deliberate on the grants to be recommended from the fund.
